Information about vinegar
Deutsche Version

Everything you want to know about vinegar and it’s production.

vinegarIf you buy a cheap vinegar in a shop where it is made from ethanol and has no smell or a more expensive wine vinegar that also has no smell, then you really are missing something. Unless you have bought your vinegar in a special shop then it really isn’t worth buying.

Real vinegar has an unforgetable smell and taste that once tried will spoil you for ever for the normally sold vinegar that you used to buy. It really isn’t difficult to make your own vinegar. Vinegar has many other qualities, although not proven, it is supposed to have healing qualities and helps the digestion of our food. It is also used as a conservative in the preperation of many other foods, for example pickled onions. Vinegar kills many harmful bacteria and fungal infections, it is used in many household cleaners, it removes chalk build-up and because of it’s anti-bacterial qualities, is good as an allround cleaner.

Although after too much use in the house, you could find your family complaining that the house smells like a fish and chip shop! Vinegar has an acid content of 5%, the higher content in vinegar essence is synthetically added.

To make your own vinegar you need alcohol, the vinegar bacteria, with help from oxygen, turns the alcohol into vinegar acid. The conversion is then just right, 1:1 alcohol content to acid content for the finished vinegar. All you need to do, is open a bottle of wine, leave it open for a while until you have a vinegar and a ‘starter’ for the next batch you want to make. Please read further for more vinegar recipes
